Due to the rural nature of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Diploma consortia may cover a wide geographical area. Some travelling will therefore be expected to enable learners to access specialist facilities.
The Sector Skills Council in each industry area, universities, Awarding bodies, schools and colleges have been involved in designing the content of the Diplomas. Employers have played an important role in specifying skills development needs, and the up to date knowledge required in the world of work for each Diploma area.
School and colleges have been consulted through the Diploma Development Partnership (DDP) as a qualification is rolled out.
Diplomas are not training for a specific area of work. This is the role of Apprenticeships and NVQs.
Diplomas locate general learning and skills development within a work-related context. They place an emphasis on aquiring and applying knowledge in real life situations.
No, it is unlikely that any school or college will be able to offer all the Diplomas. However by 2013, young people in the East Riding will be able to access the Diploma of their choice within a reasonable travel to learn area, either at their own school, another school, or at a college. It is likely that they will be doing some aspects of the Diploma in their own school, and other parts of it somewhere else.
Young people can check what is on offer in their local area by looking at the "Where" section of this website, and by logging on to the Area Prospectus for the East Riding and Hull.
