Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are Universities going to accept young people who have undertaken a Diploma?
  • Yes, many universities such as Warwick, Manchester and Leeds are backing Diplomas as having the potential to be excellent preparation for the most demanding university courses.  Universities will be able to specify particular combinations of options within a Diploma which reflect the entrance requirements for particular courses.

Diplomas have been developed to give young people the analytical and research skills they need to succeed on a higher or further education course.

  • Where can I get more information?
  • Visit the young persons Diploma website

  • How will the new Diplomas be graded?
  • Grades are represented in a similar way to GCSE or A Level grades:

    • Foundation Diploma: A*, A, B or ungraded (u)
    • Higher Diploma: A*, A, B, C or ungraded (u)
    • Advanced Diploma: A*, A, B, C, D or ungraded (u)

To achieve a Diploma, you will also need to pass the three Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT as well as the subjects you choose for your Additional Specialist Learning. • What will the new Diploma be equivalent to?
  • Foundation Level is equivalent to 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades D-G
Higher Level is equivalent to 7 GCSE at grades A*-C
Advanced Level is equivalent to 3.5 A-Levels

  • Will Diplomas involve any travelling?
  • Due to the rural nature of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Diploma consortia may cover a wide geographical area.  Some travelling will therefore  be expected to enable learners to access specialist facilities.

  • What does employer designed mean?
  • The Sector Skills Council in each industry area, universities, Awarding bodies, schools and colleges have been involved in designing the content of the Diplomas. Employers have played an important role in specifying skills development needs, and the up to date knowledge  required in the world of work for each Diploma area.

School and colleges have been consulted through the Diploma Development Partnership (DDP) as a qualification is rolled out.

  • Are Diplomas intended to channel students directly into a specific sector of work?
  • Diplomas are not training for a specific area of work. This is the role of Apprenticeships and NVQs.

Diplomas locate general learning and skills development within a work-related context. They place an emphasis on aquiring and applying knowledge in real life situations.

  • Will Diplomas be offered in all schools and colleges?
  • No, it is unlikely that any school or college will be able to offer all the Diplomas. However by 2013, young people in the East Riding will be able to access the Diploma of their choice within a reasonable travel to learn area, either at their own school, another school, or at a college. It is likely that they will be doing some aspects of the Diploma in their own school, and other parts of it somewhere else.

Young people can check what is on offer in their local area by looking at the "Where" section of this website, and by logging on to the Area Prospectus for the East Riding and Hull.
